About the University

Brunel is a world-class university based in Uxbridge, West London. Established in 1966 Brunel’s distinctive mission has always been to combine academic rigour with the practical, entrepreneurial and imaginative approach pioneered by our names sake Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Brunel’s research ethos generates a culture of intellectual endeavour fundamental to the achievement and success of all students and staff; it also encourages the cross-fertilisation of ideas and expertise for which we have long been famous.

About the faculty/school

With its five academic divisions of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Biosciences, Social Work and Health Studies/Community Health, the School of Health Sciences and Social Care is one of the largest at Brunel University. We offer a modern and exciting range of courses with flexible modes of study at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to our 1,800 students.

The School has over 100 academic staff and 20 support staff involved in the delivery of research-led teaching and research activity. Our 40 research students and fellows add to the School's vibrant research culture and scholarly excellence. Research carried out within the School has not only pushed back the frontiers of knowledge and understanding, but also informed changes and developments, through implementation of findings, to the benefit of people, including patients and clients using health and social care services.

In 2006, the bicentennial year celebrating the birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the School moved to a new, purpose built building on the University's Uxbridge Campus. This flagship building signifies Brunel University's investment in the future growth and development of the School of Health Sciences and Social Care, and of our staff and students. Together we will continue to enhance the "spirit of innovation" espoused by I K Brunel through research, and learning and teaching.

Application process

Applicants will be selected to study with us on the basis of their application. Interviews will take place only when there is a need to do so, as in the case of an ongoing medical condition, or when an applicant has declared a special educational need such as case of dyslexia. These students will be interviewed after they have accepted our offer to study at Brunel University. The purpose of this interview is to ensure that any strategies that need to be in place to optimise their learning experience can be identified early.

In addition to our academic requirements, we would encourage applicants where possible to obtain a short observation work placement in physiotherapy. This experience gives applicants a valuable insight into the profession and is associated with an enhanced commitment to the course. All applicants should demonstrate their researched knowledge of the profession on their application forms.

A satisfactory health declaration and an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check will be required from all applicants as part of the degree registration process.
