Next Stage Review

The Next Stage Review carried out in England set out to build on the progress made in delivering the vision set out in the NHS Plan (DH, 2000) and the Government's reform agenda, to identify the way forward for a 21st Century NHS. This should be clinically-driven, patient-centred and responsive to local communities.

The NHS Next Stage Review final report was published on the 30th June 2008, alongside four other documents:
  1. A High Quality Workforce: NHS Next Stage Review
  2. NHS Next Stage Review: Our vision for primary and community care
  3. Next Stage Review: Our vision for primary and community care: what it means for nurses, midwives, health visitors and AHPs
  4. the NHS Constitution consultation

The CSP has published a briefing on the NHS Next Stage Review High Quality Care For All to outline the key elements emerging from the NHS Next Stage Review process and the opportunities presented for physiotherapy and other AHPs to promote their combined and unique contributions to health and well being service delivery. We urge all members to read this briefing.

Members in England should also read the strategic framework or 'vision' produced by their local Strategic Health Authority, produced as part of the NSR Review process, to understand what the priorities will be for commissioners. See the CSP's SHA Vision Synopsis document for more details.

Members will also find it useful to read the report produced by the CSP, on behalf of the Allied Health Professions Federation (AHPF) AHPs as Integrators of Care (PDF document download - size 400kb). The report is a composite of conversations and exemplars of innovative AHP practice that took place at conference as part of the NHS Next Stage Review process.

A number of the initiatives contained within the Next Stage Review publications, such as the NHS Constitution and personal health budgets will be included in the Health Bill to be introduced to Parliament early in 2009.
