National physio support service proposed by Labour
Published: 30 Apr 2010The Labour Party has pledged to create a 'national physio support service' if re-elected.
Their manifesto states that this service would help people in every area of the country to regain their independence and confidence after a crisis or the first time they need care.
It goes on to say 'these services are essential if we are to ensure more people are looked after in their homes and overall costs are to be controlled. They will be funded through savings and efficiencies in the health budget and in local government.'
Health Secretary briefs CSP
CSP chief executive Phil Gray yesterday asked Health Secretary Andy Burnham about the plans.
'Mr Burnham explained that this was an essential part of the Labour Party's plans to bring health and social services together in supporting people to stay independent in their own homes wherever possible,' Mr Gray said.
Crucial role of physios
Mr Burnham told Mr Gray that re-enablement and rehabilitation provided by physiotherapists was crucial if their plans for a national care service for older people was going to work and be affordable.
He said that if Labour were re-elected they would engage in early discussions with the CSP about how a national physio support service could be developed and implemented.
