Physiotherapists can be seen as pioneers of complementary (or 'alternative') approaches to healthcare.

The Society currently has four such recognised groups. Three of them have an overt focus on one treatment modality - the acupuncture, craniosacral and reflex therapy groups - while the energy medicine group embraces underlying principles behind many complementary techniques:
