Area of Interest

The PPA was formed to bring together and provide information for physiotherapists with the common interest of managing patients with acute and chronic pain. It will hold an interest for physiotherapists working in many specialities.

How Does the Group Support Continuing Professional Development / Lifelong Learning

Publications
PPA News is published two times a year. Topical Issues in Pain (1-5) are yearbooks published in conjunction with the PPA and are available to members at a discounted price.

The PPA runs two study days per year, and is involved with the programme at the CSP Congress, with the highlight being the Patrick Wall Lecture.

Website
The PPA website was established in 2000. It has member and non-member sections. It includes an introduction to the PPA, its history and constitution, details of how to join and a “who's who” section. Courses, publications and reviews are listed and previous issues of PPA News can be downloaded by members. The site also hosts an open debate forum on pain-related research. PPA members also moderate the lively iCSP Pain Management Network.

Regional network
The group has one regional branch: PPA North.

Links with other groups/organisations
The group has links with other interest groups including the 'Pain Management Programme' and the 'Information' Special Interest Groups of The Pain Society. Further information can be obtained from The British Pain Society. The PPA also maintains links with international physiotherapy special interest groups, and the Pain and Movement Special Interest Group of the International Association for the Study of Pain.

How Does the Group Promote Research and Evaluation Promoting research awareness
PPA's five-year strategic plan includes support for research activity. Critical reviews of studies, books, and recent publications appear in the group's newsletter.

 

Published evidence-based material
Standards for Physiotherapists Working in Pain Management Programmes, available from the CSP or from the PPA website. The Topical Issues in Pain yearbooks are based on the latest evidence available regarding pain and its management. PPA (2004), 'Recommendations for Self-Reported Measures of Pain-Related Functional Limitation/Disability in Low-Back Pain', CLEF 04, CSP have been produced by the PPA and the CSP, and an update is planned.

Promoting research awareness
The PPA website is developing an interactive discussion forum on pain-related research issues. PPA members moderate the iCSP Pain Management Network.

Who Can Join

CSP members are eligible to join. Associate membership is for physiotherapists who are not members of the CSP and includes other professions.

What is Expected of Members

To develop an awareness amongst physiotherapists of the multifactorial nature of pain and of the biopsychosocial, evidence-based approach to its management.
