Our structure
CSP Council manages the Society's affairs with a number of member-led structures to underpin its role.
Council
As its elected governing body, CSP Council identifies and agrees CSP policy and strategy.
The work of Council is supported by two standing committees (the Industrial Relations Committee and the Practice and Development Committee) and a number of sub committees and working groups.
The Country Board and English Regional Networks serve as a communication channel between the Society's members, its Council and the officers employed by the CSP.
Key roles on Council are now held by Ann Green (chair), Dr Helena Johnson (vice chair) and Sue England (treasurer).
See a full list of members (with email addresses) on our Council contacts page.
Chair of Council Ann Green
Ann Green
New chair of Council Ann Green currently works in higher education teaching undergraduates and supervising postgraduate students. She also works for the Health Professions Council advising on registration and programme development. Over the course of her career she has been employed as a physiotherapy assistant and NHS clinician, and a partner in private practice.
Her involvement in CSP activity has been extensive and includes being a CSP steward and chairing a clinical interest group. She has also had an active role in the Charitable Trust, Charting the Future, the Higher Education Network, the Research and Clinical Effectiveness Committee and the Educational Awards Panel. Ann also led on programme development for this year's highly successful Congress in Liverpool.
Drawing upon her varied experience Ann sees herself as ideally placed to take the profession into the future. As chair, she promises to listen to the wider membership and ensure concerns are heard and opinions valued.
Vice-chair of Council Helena Johnson
Helena Johnson
New vice-chair of Council Helena Johnson currently works in higher education, leading a team of physiotherapists, teaching on pre-registration physiotherapy programmes, and developing CPD opportunities for assistants and qualified staff. Over the course of her career she has also been employed as a physiotherapy assistant and NHS clinician, and worked in private practice.
Her involvement in CSP activity includes the Clinical Co-ordinators Network, the CPD and Postgraduate Education Network, and CPD panel. She is also chair of the Education Forum and will chair the programme development group for Congress 2010.
As vice-chair of Council, Helena is keen to support the vision of moving the board structure into modernised networks. She has been a member of Northern & Yorkshire Board since 1999.
Council treasurer Sue England
Sue England works in private practice in Warwickshire and has been re-elected to serve a second term representing the independent private sector. She has been a member of several CSP committees and working groups for a number of years and has served on Council for the last four.
As treasurer, she is keen to ensure the Society is managed as efficiently as possible while delivering its strategic priorities to all members and external parties including patients. Her knowledge of both service delivery and the value of high level clinical skills to influence stakeholders on the value of investing in physiotherapy as part of programme of care will be a great asset to this key role.
Country Boards
The Society has 3 country boards for Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. These each operate as a large committee, drawing their membership from a wide range of interested constituencies in their area. The prime function of the boards is to act as the first line of contact between Council, its committees and the membership. Many matters are referred to the boards for discussion by Council at its meetings; representatives bring members' views back to the Council. As all branches send at least one representative to board meetings, there is also a channel of communication with the entire membership at branch level.
CSP English Regional Networks
To respond to recent changes in health care in England, the Society is working towards a structure that enables you, as a member, to be both supported and involved in working to maximise opportunities for physiotherapy.
From March 2009 to March 2010 the CSP is running the English Networks Programme and this will be evaluated by Council in June 2010. Assuming the Programme is successful, and subject to Council's approval, the English Regional Networks will become an important part of the CSP and will continue to facilitate new ways of working. This is an exciting time to be involved as the Regional Networks are being launched across England.
The Organisation
The CSP employs over 100 staff based in offices in central London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast, in addition to some home workers. Headed up by CSP chief executive Phil Gray, with support from deputy chief executive Sue Browning, the organisation has five discrete functions to conduct member business:
- Practice and development promotes high standards of physiotherapy practice, education, research and development. The function also enables members to connect with one another around clinical and service delivery issues.
- Employment Relations and Union Services (ERUS) is the trade union arm of the CSP. ERUS staff support CSP members, both individually and collectively, in the workplace and promote both CSP and members' interests at local, regional, national and international level.
- Communications and Marketing promotes the physiotherapy profession and facilitates communications with members and other stakeholders.
- Finance, Facilities and Membership manage the financial affairs of the Society, membership business and upkeep of its various premises.
- The Chief Executive’s Office supervises and coordinates all decisions of Council and all reports submitted to Council from standing committees. It's also responsible for the Society's Regulatory Committee and also includes the CSP's IT, HR and EHU teams.
